This is my Fixie. It’s fun. I like the way it rides and looks. I think it’s finally “done”. That’s not true, the rear wheel could use an upgrade, it’s still a Walmart component.

I know reflectors are lame, but the rear one came from a 60s Raleigh and the front one of original to the bike. It keeps some old school flare which I wanted

2 Wheels Good?

only if you’re not one of those people who think it’s OK to plow over people and run through traffic signals/signs because “it’s just too hard!” to stop with a fixie.

I know reflector s are lame

oh, you think being visible is “lame.” never mind.

I usually  do not stop for stop signs, I do stop for red lights, i don’t have a death wish. and I stay off side walks with all my bikes.

The reflectors thing is the general opinion of cyclistsz. Especially the fixed gear crowd, and BMX scene I grew up in , not really my opinion.

At least I don’t run my BMX break-less anymore.. .

I just got my BMX up and running last week, it had a bad cassette it would go a half crank without engaging sometimes which... hurts.

Kinja'd!!!

But I bought it for 40 bucks and now I have about 90 into it. Not bad. I actually rode it for about an hour today. It’s good, feels indestructible.

Red lights are a definite stop but stop signs? You can tell pretty easy on a bike whether or not it’s clear. Bikes make practically no sound, you have excellent visibility, and with a bike you are going so slow that any traffic means it’s a no go. It’s a non- issue.

I know that feeling from snapping chains while pedaling...

I really need to ride mine more. All of my money went into it when I was in high school, so it’s pretty much the most durable bike from 8 years ago... I’v e been thinking about putting a brake on it and taking it to the MTB park around here since I think my “ jumping down staircases” years are behind me.

I have friends that used to ride fixed gear, but I never quite understood the appeal. Coasting downhill is literally the best part of bike riding, so why would you want a bike that won't let you coast?

Not a bad idea. I have a “all my money is in this” BMX in high school, it was a “this broke so I’m going to get a stronger part bike. It was stolen and I never saw it again.  It that got me ink skateboarding. I couldn’t afford another bike so I bought a broad

I like it! I even like the coke can and the reflectors. When all together it has a sort of Outlaw look. Like it’s used and abused but has the potential to be a clean showcar showbike.

Kinja'd!!!

I also love the rear taillight, wherever it came from, it looks custom and not like an off-the-shelf part.

I pedal down hill. I like to go fast. I view it as a way to get more exercise out of shorter rides. Turns a 2 miles ride to work into a cardio work out. The whole breaking with the pedals thing is kinda cool too.

Thanks, that’s kind of the idea of the “build” all mismatched, and roughy around the edges.

The light is just a bottom dollar LED light. Works great and has a flasher mode too. It is worth mentioning that the light fell off the clip on my road bike, and I lost it. However at 5.50 a piece you can’t really go wrong. And I like how small it is.

I converted my Schwinn World Sport to a single-speed. That’s when I learned that my knees were getting too old to deal with hills on a single-speed.

Kinja'd!!!

I put it back.

Looks nice tho. Thankfully my town is very flat. So a single speed for short rides is no problem. I have used it for the biggest “hill” in town and it’s doable, but it’s a lot easier on my road bike.

Thanks. I stripped it down and repainted it the silver/blue fade. It used to be a red similar to yours.

I can imagine that cassette could be a problem. I did some riding on a mountain bike my uncle was messing with, where the chain jammed if you used it on the middle chain ring. Definitely made for some inconvenient riding since if you needed to go up a hill you had to change across and either hope it went fast enough to not jam, or quickly pedal backwards to clear the jam and then forward to get it started again on the smallest chain ring.

I like the fade a lot. I’ve thought about repainting this bike, but I’m kind of attached to it’s patina and decals.

I have a soft spot for yellow bikes so when I build my next fixie it’ll be yellow. In fact my first fixie build was yellow but the front chain ring bent and I being an old cottered crank Raleigh I decided to move on rather than trying to fix it. Plus I wanted drop bars, and for the price of the bars alone I was able to buy a the Maruishi, I still have the frame and may do something with it eventually.

Kinja'd!!!

My last yellow bike was a Schwinn that I loved. I basically wanted a big Stingray with a basket. Found this bike painted all black at a goodwill about and bought it for 5 bucks. And another 80s Huffy for 3. Between the two I built this.

Kinja'd!!!

Lost that to a thief. It was stollen out of a locked garage by my friendse   little brother.

Cool. Idk much about Nashiki. I know that now they are sold at Dick’s Sporting Goods and are a middle of the road bike quality wise. But I’m guessing like a lot of bike companies, they are better 30-40 years ago.

Lugged Japanese Steel FTW!  Dig the license plate rear deck.

Also, Grant Petersen (Rivendell) is very pro reflector.

It was bad. With a BMX you don’t use the seat so when you pedal formal All of your weight is on that forward pedal. No resistance mean the pedal just drops. It’s like when you miss and step and your foot falls farther than you expected only it falls nearly 2 feat and your fall on your face at 15mph

When I was training for a cycling vacation (in Montana), I converted my Bob Jackson to FG to gain fitness. It worked...I just needed to ride it more....After I got fat, I flipped it to SS, but I’m getting back in shape, so back to FG it may go....

I like that big round reflector a lot. It has character.

The plate is mostly there to act as a fender. I ride this bike to work most days I showed up with a mud up my back once and my bod was not happy. The color was just a can I had laying around and I thought it would contrast the red well.

The current bikes aren’t related to the older ones. Dick’s just bought the name and slapped it on bikes made by Accell. They aren’t even Japanese made anymore. I got mine for $40 about twelve years ago from a bike nonprofit in Tucson.

Sounds about right. Shame.

That a good deal. Bikes are stupid expensive. Currently looking at spending 1000 on my next USED  road bike. But that won’t be till next spring.

My first bike was yellow. It used to be one of my favorite colors.

The fade is really easy to do. You should try it!

I’m not a fan of flat-bar bikes. Drop bars look so much better, but I never use the drop (my back doesn’t like it). That being said, I went to drops on the World Sport so I could use a set of brifters.

My favorite setup is a moustache bar with barcons . T ha t’ s what I use on my road bike.

They may look strange, but they are very comfy.

Seems like a good way to go, you still get a lot of adjustably but if you don’t use the drops why have them? For now I still like a good aero tuck I love my drops. Coming from BMX I never thought I’d like drops, but after a few miles on a road bike I got it.

Spring training back in the ‘70s, we’d use a flip-flop hub on our road bikes. 18 or so tooth fixed and freewheel gears. Took off the front changer and rode a 44- or 46- tooth chainring.   Ride out until tired on the fixed gear and then just make it back home on the freewheel. Got us in shape quickly. I recall a wide chain on a Campy chain ring made a lot of noise...

Naw. Best part of riding a bike was when there were 50 or so enemies around and only 4 or 5 teammates in a pack. Uphill and down dale we’d jostle and bump off each other to get our leaders to the front.

Long runouts f or miles at full throttle to breakaway from that pack with a few others to see what we could do. Also, alone on a rainy day on a long road for hours just to enjoy the dance that is pushing the pedals. Downhill is too fraught with peril.
